Car bomb explosion outside Moscow resulted in the death of a Russian general

A high-ranking Russian general, Lt. Gen. Yaroslav Moskalik, was killed in a car bomb attack in Balashikha, near Moscow, the second such attack on a top military officer in four months. The explosive device was rigged with shrapnel, and the incident is being investigated by Russia’s top criminal investigation agency. No suspects have been mentioned in connection with the attack. The killing of Moskalik follows a similar attack on Lt. Gen. Igor Kirillov in December, for which Ukraine took responsibility. Kirillov was in charge of Russia’s Radiation, Biological, and Chemical Protection Forces. The recent bombing occurred as U.S. President Donald Trump’s envoy was set to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss a U.S.-brokered peace plan for Ukraine. The meeting between the two leaders was their fourth encounter since February. The Russian Foreign Ministry described the attack on Moskalik as a “terror attack.”
