A group of volunteers from the nonprofit organization Volunteer Cleaning Communities gathered at Canoga Avenue and Prairie Street on Tuesday to clean up litter and trash in the San Fernando Valley. Led by founder Jill Mather, the group has collected over 400,000 pounds of trash since 2021. Teams of four volunteers work daily to clean up illegal dumping sites, homeless encampments, and the Los Angeles River.
Volunteers work seven days a week, combing streets, bike paths, and freeways to clear trash that often comes from homeless individuals and fast-food establishments. Using the LA City 311 app, volunteers report large items for pickup, such as mattresses dumped along the streets. The organization has grown significantly and now has leaders throughout the Valley who organize cleanup efforts on weekends.
Recently, Mather organized an all-street litter cleanup on DeSoto Avenue with over 120 volunteers, filling 225 bags of trash and uncovering more than 30 illegal dumping sites in just two hours. The organization also partners with schools, churches, and government officials for service days to continue their mission of keeping the San Fernando Valley clean.
