Proposal for Private School Vouchers Ruled to Violate Senate Regulations

Republicans Face Setback in National School Voucher Plan

By COLLIN BINKLEY, Associated Press

Washington, D.C. — A major Republican initiative to expand private school vouchers encountered a significant hurdle on Friday when the Senate parliamentarian declared the proposed tax credit plan incompatible with procedural rules. This initiative aimed to provide federal tax credits for scholarships enabling families to enroll their children in private schools, a key educational reform championed by former President Donald Trump.

The parliamentarian’s ruling adds to ongoing challenges for Republicans, as essential provisions within their tax and spending bill are deemed ineligible for inclusion in a filibuster-proof reconciliation package. While the rulings are advisory, they are rarely ignored, pushing Republicans to reconsider their approach.

The plan, initially expected to allocate up to $5 billion in annual tax credits to support educational choices, would have benefited nearly all families, except those exceeding three times their area’s median income. Critics argue these policies risk diverting vital funds from public schools.

Simultaneously, another contentious proposal seeking to tax college endowments—excluding religious institutions like Hillsdale College—also faced dismissal. As discussions continue, proponents of private school choice vow to persist in their efforts for educational reform.
