Kansas City Current Maintains Perfect Home Record with 1-0 Victory Over Angel City
Kansas City, MO – Brazilian international goalkeeper Lorena made a pivotal penalty save, while fellow countrywoman Bia Zaneratto scored the decisive goal, leading the Kansas City Current to a 1-0 victory over Angel City on Friday night. This win marked the Current’s sixth consecutive triumph and solidified their position at the top of the NWSL standings.
The Current, boasting a record of 11-2-0, have yet to lose at home this season, winning all six of their matches at CPKC Stadium. Their last home defeat occurred in July 2024 against Orlando. The night was highlighted in the 56th minute when Lorena leapt to her right to parry a penalty kick taken by Angel City forward Alyssa Thompson. The ball struck the crossbar before deflecting out for a corner kick—this save represented both Lorena’s first penalty save and Thompson’s first missed opportunity in the NWSL.
Reigning NWSL MVP Temwa Chawinga also came close to scoring, but her low shot was saved by Angel City goalkeeper Angelina Anderson. Zaneratto capitalized on the rebound in the 69th minute, slotting the ball into the net. With this goal, Zaneratto has now scored five times this season, trailing Chawinga, who leads the team with eight goals.
Angel City continues to struggle under new head coach Alex Straus, remaining winless in their last five matches, which include one tie and two losses. As the season progresses, the Current’s strong home performance and impressive form position them as serious contenders in the league.
