Battle of the Bats: Padres Struggle in Loss to Diamondbacks
PHOENIX — The San Diego Padres faced another disheartening defeat, falling 5-1 against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field on Friday night. The loss marks a troubling trend for the Padres, having dropped three of their last four games, largely due to an ongoing offensive slump.
For the Padres, the recent hitting woes continue to haunt them. Over the past 20 games, the team has recorded six or fewer hits nine times, and their batting average of .218 over the last 26 games ranks as the worst in Major League Baseball. In this outing, they went 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position and have scored three or fewer runs in half their last 14 games.
“This game is tough,” remarked Fernando Tatis Jr. “We’re giving a tough battle. We’re going to keep grinding and find a way.”
The offense appeared stagnant for most of the game, with highlights including Tatis’ early double and a few fleeting scoring opportunities that ultimately fizzled out. Starting pitcher Stephen Kolek struggled, lasting just 4⅓ innings and allowing five runs, compounding the team’s woes. This has become a recurring issue, as Padres starters have gone six innings only three times in the past 16 games.
While the bullpen showcased promise, with Sean Reynolds and Wandy Peralta efficiently navigating their innings, the lack of run support rendered their efforts moot. The Diamondbacks capitalized on the Padres’ mistakes, with Josh Naylor’s second-inning homer signalling a shift in momentum.
As the Padres look to regroup, they’ll need to find a way to reignite their offense if they hope to turn their season around.
