Innovative Battery Technology Partnership Established Between Swansea University and University of Limerick
Swansea University and the University of Limerick have launched a groundbreaking research initiative aimed at revolutionizing battery technology, backed by the Wales-Ireland Research Alliance Award. This collaboration will leverage Swansea’s expertise in battery materials and design alongside Limerick’s advancements in component development, targeting the creation of sodium metal batteries utilizing an anode-free solution, which eliminates the need for handling sodium metal during production.
Dr. Ashley Willow, co-lead of the project and Senior Lecturer in Chemical Engineering at Swansea, highlighted the potential of sodium as a cheaper, more abundant alternative to lithium, promising a cost-effective route to producing batteries that can compete with advanced options like lithium iron phosphate (LFP). The innovative design is expected to deliver enhanced energy storage, making it ideal for applications in electric vehicles.
Supported by €73,155 from the Research Alliance Award, part of a larger €584,378 funding framework, this initiative aims to tackle the dual challenges of energy resilience and sustainability across Wales and Ireland. Rebecca Evans MS, Welsh Government Cabinet Secretary for Economy, emphasized the project’s role in fostering innovation and addressing societal challenges, aligning with the Ireland-Wales Shared Statement and Joint Action Plan for 2021-2025.
The partnership is positioned to enhance both nations’ standings in the rapidly expanding global battery market, capitalizing on future funding opportunities through Horizon Europe. Dr. Ibrahim Aminu from Limerick spoke on the project’s potential to forge a long-term strategic alliance aimed at addressing pressing societal needs while fostering regional innovation.
This collaboration not only signals a significant advancement in clean energy research but also symbolizes a commitment to future technological pursuits in both Wales and Ireland.
