Lake Area Technical College Achieves Accreditation for Surgical Technology Program

Watertown, SD – Lake Area Technical College (Lake Area Tech) proudly announces that its Associate of Applied Science in Surgical Technology program has been granted initial accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). This recognition highlights the program’s commitment to quality education and adherence to stringent industry standards.

Vice President Cam Corey expressed pride in the achievement, stating, "This recognition is the result of tireless work by our Surgical Technology team, clinical partners, and college leadership." He emphasized that it reflects the college’s dedication to equipping students for successful careers in one of South Dakota’s highest-demand healthcare professions.

The Surgical Technology program at Lake Area Tech combines classroom learning with hands-on training in simulation labs and clinical experiences. Curriculum essentials include surgical instrumentation, sterilization techniques, anatomy, aseptic technology, and operating room procedures.

CAAHEP’s accreditation process entailed a comprehensive review, including a site visit to evaluate the program’s curriculum, faculty qualifications, clinical partnerships, and student outcomes. Corey highlighted the significance of the accreditation, asserting, "It assures students, employers, and patients that our program meets or exceeds nationally established standards for quality education."

This announcement coincides with an ongoing construction project at Lake Area Tech aimed at enhancing the Surgical Technology program’s facilities. The project will introduce three state-of-the-art simulation labs, three classrooms, and additional support spaces, set to be completed by the Fall semester of 2025.
