Live Coverage: Cardinals Cast Votes to Elect New Pope

Cardinals Set to Convene for Papal Election

By Nicole Winfield, Associated Press

The conclave to elect the successor to Pope Francis is set to begin Wednesday, marking a significant moment in Catholic history. The term "conclave," originating from the Italian phrase "con clave" (with a key), highlights the seclusion of cardinals during this process.

Upon entering the Sistine Chapel, the voting begins after the master of liturgical ceremonies declares “Extra Omnes,” signaling that all but cardinal electors must leave. Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re will start the day with a morning Mass, followed by afternoon proceedings where cardinals swear an oath before casting their votes.

If no pope is elected on the first ballot, subsequent votes will take place each morning and afternoon until a two-thirds majority is reached. In total, they can conduct up to four votes daily.

Once a new pope is selected, the ballots are burned, with black smoke indicating no decision and white smoke confirming the election. Bells will toll, and the new pope will be announced from the loggia in St. Peter’s Square, followed by his first blessing.

The Associated Press will livestream the event for followers worldwide.
