Two California High Schools Exit Nevada Sports Association Over Transgender Athlete Policy
In a significant move, Truckee and North Tahoe High Schools in California have announced their withdrawal from the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association (NIAA) following the state’s recent decision to prohibit transgender athletes from competing in girls’ sports. This decision has sparked criticism and raised questions about compliance with California’s diverse laws concerning gender identity.
Amber Burke, a spokesperson for Truckee Schools, emphasized the necessity for the schools to adhere to California law, which protects gender identity and expression. “We are a California school district… the recent NIAA policy conflicts with California laws,” Burke stated. The Truckee Tahoe Unified School District reinforced this sentiment in a letter to parents, citing the NIAA’s new regulations as directly opposing California’s AB 1955, which ensures students’ rights to privacy and protection against discrimination.
The NIAA adopted its new policy in April, reversing its previous stance that permitted transgender athletes to compete in girls’ sports amid escalating controversy. Notably, this change aligned with national debates surrounding transgender participation in school athletics.
In contrast, the California Interscholastic Federation plans to uphold a policy that permits biological males to compete in women’s sports, diverging from Nevada’s approach. This move has led to broad public discourse, with a recent survey indicating considerable opposition among Californians regarding transgender athletes competing in women’s sports.
NIAA Executive Director Tim Jackson confirmed their collaboration with Tahoe-Truckee Unified School District for a seamless transition as the high schools join California’s athletic federation.
