El Camino Real Charter High School Academic Decathlon Team Celebrates Historic Win
WOODLAND HILLS, CA — On May 5, students at El Camino Real Charter High School took a break from classes to celebrate a remarkable achievement: the school’s Academic Decathlon team has won its third consecutive U.S. Academic Decathlon National Championship, held May 1-3 in Des Moines, Iowa. This victory marks the team’s 11th national title, the most by any school in the nation.
Students filled the bleachers during a rally to cheer on their nine-member team, recognized for outscoring competitors nationwide with a total of 52,987.3 points, winning by 1,013 points and earning 34 individual medals. Senior Brendan Luna was highlighted as the highest-scoring student in the nation, expressing gratitude for the teamwork and support that defined their journey.
Leanne Warren, who plans to study microbiology at Brandeis University, reflected on the personal growth and community spirit fostered by the program. Coach Stephanie Franklin, now in her 17th year, emphasized the transformative experience of the competition, stating it uncovers students’ untapped potential and instills a sense of accomplishment and belonging.
This victory reinforces the school’s legacy of excellence in academic pursuits.
