Tigers Dominate Angels in Series Finale, 13-1
In a commanding performance on Sunday, the Detroit Tigers triumphed over the Los Angeles Angels with a decisive 13-1 victory, clinching three out of four games in the series. Trey Sweeney and Kerry Carpenter were the stars of the matchup, each contributing homeruns and totaling four hits, while driving in an impressive 11 runs collectively.
Sweeney kick-started the scoring in the second inning with a single that brought in the first run against Angels pitcher Jack Kochanowicz (1-5). Carpenter followed up with a two-run double that stretched the lead to 3-0, making use of Jo Adell’s unsuccessful attempt to catch the ball as it rattled off the wall.
In the sixth inning, Carpenter launched his eighth homer, a three-run blast off reliever Michael Darrell-Hicks, extending the Tigers’ lead to 8-0. Sweeney added to the score in the seventh with a homer featuring two runners on base, and he later secured a two-run single in the eighth inning, finishing with six RBIs—both career highs. Carpenter also set a personal best with five RBIs.
Colt Keith contributed with a two-run homer in the third inning, marking his third of the season. On the mound, Reese Olson (4-2) delivered an impressive 5 2/3 innings of shutout baseball, allowing only three hits while striking out eight. Brenan Hanifee allowed one run over the next 1 1/3 innings, with Beau Brieske and Will Vest closing the game.
For the Angels, who currently sit at the bottom of the AL West, Zach Neto was the lone bright spot with two hits and one RBI. After a rough start to their 10-game homestand, including a 1-3 record so far, the Angels will next host the Toronto Blue Jays for a three-game series starting Tuesday night.
