TCU Captures First NCAA Women’s Beach Volleyball Championship
Gulf Shores, Ala. – TCU’s Daniela Alvarez and Tania Moreno orchestrated a thrilling comeback to secure the Horned Frogs’ inaugural NCAA women’s beach volleyball championship, clinching a 3-2 victory over Loyola Marymount (LMU) on Sunday. As the second-seeded team, TCU (32-5) made history as the first school to win the title besides USC and UCLA, which dominated the championship scene previously.
Alvarez and Moreno, who took a year off for Olympic play, showcased their strength by remaining unbeaten as a duo over four years. After losing the opening game to LMU’s Michelle Shaffer and Anna Pelloia (18-21), they rallied to win the next two games 21-15 and 15-6.
The Horned Frogs demonstrated their prowess throughout the tournament, defeating No. 6 Cal Poly and No. 7 Texas to reach the finals. TCU’s No. 3 pair Sofia Izuzquizal and Allanis Navas contributed a solid point with a sweep, while Anhelina Khmil and Ana Vergara also secured a victory.
LMU (38-7), which had an impressive run defeating USC and UCLA, solidified their place in history, with coach John Mayer being named National Coach of the Year.
