Press Release: SpaceX’s Starbase Approved as Official City Amid Controversy
McALLEN, Texas – In a significant move for the region, residents of the small community surrounding Elon Musk’s SpaceX facility have voted overwhelmingly to establish "Starbase" as an official city. The vote, held Saturday, saw 212 residents in favor and just 6 against the proposal, with most eligible voters being SpaceX employees.
Musk heralded the outcome on his social media platform X, proclaiming, "It is now a real city!" Starbase serves as the launch site for SpaceX’s ambitious space programs, including contracts with NASA and the Department of Defense aimed at lunar and Martian missions. Originally suggested by Musk in 2021, the transition to city status has encountered minimal resistance from local officials, primarily due to the economic benefits SpaceX brings to the area.
However, the formation of this company town has sparked criticism. Opponents express concerns over Musk’s increased control, particularly regarding the potential to close Boca Chica Beach and State Park for launch operations. Current proposals at the state legislature aim to shift authority from the county to the city’s new leadership, heightening fears about access to public spaces.
Environmental advocates have organized protests against the plans, emphasizing the importance of preserving the local environment and public access to recreational areas. Josette Hinojosa, a resident and protester, voiced concerns about the unpredictability of beach access due to rocket launches, stating, “some days it’s closed, and some days you get turned away.”
As SpaceX seeks to increase launch rates from five to 25 annually, community dynamics are likely to shift dramatically. Local governance and public involvement will be critical as Starbase evolves from a company hub into a recognized municipality.
