High School Football Players Allegedly Assaulted by Teammates in California

Press Article: Allegations of Assault Rock Santa Margarita Catholic High School Football Team

Santa Margarita, CA — Disturbing allegations have surfaced involving the Santa Margarita Catholic High School football team, as reported by the Orange County Register. The investigation details instances of alleged sexual assault against players by their teammates, reminiscent of the recent Mater Dei football hazing scandal.

Scott Reid, the investigative reporter behind the revelations, highlighted an incident that occurred on September 24, when a 15-year-old sophomore was ambushed by around 15 to 18 varsity players in the locker room. The report states that the student was assaulted as he attempted to prepare for practice, with players allegedly ganging up on him and inflicting injuries while others actively participated in the assault, which reportedly lasted about 15 seconds.

The alleged assault escalated as teammates restrained the sophomore while others mocked his pleas for help, suggesting a culture of intimidation and silence within the team. Following the incident, the young athlete was reportedly discouraged from seeking help, being told, "It’s football, you knew what you were signing up for."

In response to the allegations, Santa Margarita Principal Cheri Wood confirmed that at least eight other players may have endured similar assaults. The school has faced scrutiny, with head coach Anthony Rouzier being placed on administrative leave following the incident.

The Diocese of Orange has promised thorough investigations, stating that they take the allegations seriously. Following the Orange County Sheriff’s preliminary investigation, which found no evidence of sexual assault, the school has engaged an independent firm to conduct further reviews.

As the Eagles struggle this season, currently standing at 3-6 under interim coach Steve Fifita, the wider implications of this scandal continue to unfold, raising questions about player safety and a toxic culture within high school sports.
