Cargo Shipments Strained by Tariff Uncertainty Ahead of Peak Season
As the back-to-school and fall/winter holiday seasons approach, concerns loom over cargo shipments due to ongoing tariff debates, particularly between the U.S. and China. Port of Long Beach CEO Mario Cordero noted that peak shipping season typically kicks off in July, but importers are hesitating to place orders, which threatens product availability on store shelves.
Both the Ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles forecast a significant decline in incoming cargo, alongside an increase in canceled or partially loaded sailings. The Marine Exchange of Southern California reported a sharp reduction in container ship arrivals, with only 10 scheduled for the next three days, significantly lower than the typical figures.
Port of Los Angeles Executive Director Gene Seroka highlighted a staggering 35% drop in cargo arrivals for the upcoming week, attributing it to skyrocketing prices tied to 145% tariffs on Chinese goods. He warned that this downturn would affect jobs and inflate costs for consumers.
Despite the gloomy outlook, Cordero acknowledged some positive developments with conciliatory signals from the U.S. administration and China. However, the immediate future remains clouded by uncertainty, necessitating swift resolutions for the benefit of the economy.
