The Progress Report: San Diego’s Middle Sports Initiative Is Here to Stay

Press Release: San Diego Unified’s Middle School Sports Program Champions Student Engagement and Athletic Opportunity

April 26, 2025 – Herbert Hoover High School, City Heights, CA – Kassandra Young, a seventh-grader at Language Academy, showcased her athletic prowess in flag football for the first time, leading her team to an impressive 22-2 victory over Clark Middle School and a subsequent 47-12 win against John Muir. These victories secured a playoff spot for the Language Academy Lions, highlighting the program’s impact on students who may not have previously participated in organized sports.

Since its inception just five years ago, San Diego Unified’s middle school sports program has flourished, with over 5,700 students participating across various sports. The initiative aims to fill a critical gap for middle schoolers, providing essential athletic opportunities that enhance mental and physical well-being. "The mental health and physical health needs of students at this age are significant," stated Trustee Richard Barrera.

Under the guidance of Middle School Athletics Coordinator Lonnie Jones, the program initially launched soccer in 2022, receiving overwhelming support from the community. This prompted the introduction of additional sports such as basketball, volleyball, and, most recently, flag football. Participation soared from 884 students to nearly 6,000 within three years.

Parent feedback underscores the program’s transformative role in student lives, promoting camaraderie and personal development. With no cost barrier, families like the Baos have welcomed the opportunity for their children to engage in sports they might not otherwise experience.

Amid budget challenges, school officials remain committed to expanding the program further, exploring partnerships with local organizations to enhance funding. As the district focuses on “access,” plans include the potential addition of baseball and softball teams in the coming years.

With community support and a dedicated vision, San Diego Unified’s middle school sports program continues to champion student involvement, fostering inclusive avenues for athletic growth and personal development.
