In a troubling turn of events, the SHARE Center—a once-promising shelter for the homeless in Salinas—is facing significant scrutiny amid allegations of mismanagement and dysfunction. However, a Monterey County report revealed that the organization had only successfully found housing for 30% of shelter residents, falling short of its contractual goal of 70%.
Calls for increased oversight from local officials have intensified as BACS grapples with bureaucratic and financial pressures. By August 2023, the organization ultimately decided to terminate its contracts, including over $10 million in state grants, jeopardizing future affordable housing projects. As the community watches closely, the future of homeless services in Salinas remains uncertain.
