Elderly Residents from El Mirador Apartments Demand Better Living Conditions After Eaton Fire Incident
ALTADENA, CA – In a poignant display of resilience, elderly residents of El Mirador Apartments united on April 29, demanding accountability and improved living conditions from their property management after a harrowing evacuation during the recent Eaton Fire. Ninety-year-old Niobe Recasens, wheelchair-bound and in excruciating pain after tumbling down stairs in smoke and darkness, highlighted the plight of her fellow residents, many of whom returned to unsafe living conditions.
Recasens was rescued 14 days later, after a grueling descent with the aid of another resident. Fellow evacuee, 67-year-old Julie Esnard, expressed outrage over the inadequate responses from management and the difficulties faced by seniors who were left to fend for themselves during the crisis.
The El Mirador Alliance is now demanding immediate remediation of the apartments, round-the-clock security, and rent refunds, citing obstacles in addressing critical safety concerns post-evacuation. Community leaders, including representatives from NDLON and the Pasadena Tenants Union, are rallying support for the residents, stressing the urgency of their demands. As more voices join the cause, community solidarity remains steady: “You are not alone,” echoed Jose Madera, community director, in a show of support for the vulnerable seniors.
