Los Angeles City Council Considers Legal Action Against SoCal Edison Over Hurst Fire
LOS ANGELES — On April 30, the Los Angeles City Council unanimously voted to instruct the city attorney to explore potential legal action against Southern California Edison (SCE) related to the Hurst Fire, which burned approximately 800 acres in Sylmar earlier this year. The motion, initiated by Councilmembers Monica Rodriguez and Katy Yaroslavsky, highlights concerns about SCE’s equipment and its possible link to the fire.
The Hurst Fire ignited on January 7 amid severe Santa Ana winds, leading to significant power outages. Preliminary investigations suggest the fire may have originated near an SCE transmission tower, identified as Tower 6. The tower sustained damage and ongoing investigations are being conducted.
Gabriela Ornelas, SCE spokesperson, stated the company is cooperating with fire investigators while acknowledging that its equipment may have played a role in the fire’s ignition. In a regulatory filing, SCE noted a conductor failure at the tower on the night the fire started.
In a broader context, SCE faces scrutiny over its equipment’s role in previous fires, and the utility company is committed to supporting affected communities as investigations continue.
