Georgia Commemorates National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day with Statewide Adoption Event

Press Release

Animal Welfare Organization Hosts "No-Kill Awareness Day" for National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day

In celebration of National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day, Best Friends Animal Society, an organization committed to the welfare of dogs and cats, is proud to announce the statewide event "No-Kill Awareness Day." This event coincides with the recent resolutions passed by Georgia’s House and Senate, designating April 30, 2025, as “No-Kill Awareness Day” at the state capitol.

To commemorate this significant step towards enhancing the welfare of pets in Georgia, numerous shelters will be offering waived or reduced adoption fees for both cats and dogs on Wednesday. This initiative aims to encourage more adoptions from shelters, which is vital for reducing the number of euthanized animals.

Last year, Georgia witnessed the heartbreaking euthanasia of over 20,000 dogs and cats. Currently, only 67 out of 162 shelters statewide are classified as no-kill. Nationally, two-thirds of shelters have adopted a no-kill policy, showcasing a growing trend towards more humane practices.

Julie Castle, CEO of Best Friends Animal Society, expressed enthusiasm for Georgia’s commitment, stating, “If more Georgians choose to adopt pets from shelters instead of purchasing from breeders or stores, we are confident that the state can reach a no-kill status.”

Participating shelters across Georgia include the Bill Atkinson Animal Welfare Center, Bryan County Animal Services, and the Humane Society for Greater Savannah, among others. For specifics on hours and fees, the public is encouraged to contact the shelters directly.

With a mission to save the lives of pets and make the country entirely no-kill, Best Friends Animal Society continues its vital work in animal welfare.
