Mikey Williams Joins Sacramento State as Program Seeks Revival
Sacramento, CA – Rising basketball star Mikey Williams has officially committed to Sacramento State, making this his third college in as many seasons. The 6-foot-3 guard, originally from San Diego, first signed with Memphis out of San Ysidro High School, but never played for the team. His subsequent transfer to Central Florida was marred by injuries, limiting him to just 18 games and a modest average of 5.1 points.
At Sacramento State, Williams joins a program eager for revitalization under head coach Mike Bibby, a former NBA standout, and volunteer GM Shaquille O’Neal. The Hornets, who struggled last season with a 7-25 record, aim to improve their reputation in the Big Sky Conference. With a new basketball facility and a planned stadium upgrade, university president Luke Wood is committed to elevating the athletics program.
Williams has faced challenges beyond the court, including a recent legal ordeal stemming from a gun-related incident. After allegedly firing a weapon at an occupied vehicle, he reached a plea agreement that will reduce his felonies to a misdemeanor next August if he meets specific conditions.
Despite these hurdles, Williams has expressed optimism, seeking a fresh start. “All I needed was a chance,” he stated to his 3.6 million Instagram followers. Williams’s impressive high school reputation, featuring a 46-point debut and involvement in multiple prestigious academies, hangs in the balance as he strives to fulfill his potential at Sacramento State.
As the Hornets push forward, the addition of Williams and his fellow transfer, Jeremiah "Bear" Cherry, signals a new chapter full of promise for a team aiming to enter NCAA Tournament contention for the first time.
