Long Beach Police Make Arrest in Fatal Shooting Case
LONG BEACH — In a significant development, a 24-year-old man from Compton, Malik Cooper, has been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of Alejandro Calderon, 52, in Long Beach. Cooper was apprehended on Monday during a traffic stop in Compton after police executed a search warrant. He is currently being held on $2 million bail and has been booked on suspicion of murder.
Authorities responded to reports of an assault with a deadly weapon on March 17 at around 3:50 a.m. in the 5400 block of Atlantic Avenue. Upon arrival, officers discovered Calderon suffering from a gunshot wound to his upper body. He was rushed to a local hospital by Long Beach Fire Department paramedics but tragically succumbed to his injuries.
While the motive for the shooting remains unclear, detectives are actively investigating the incident. The case is set to be presented to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office for potential formal charges.
