Why the Club World Cup’s Substantial Bonus Won’t Benefit MLS Players

Press Release: MLS Teams Set for Big Payday at FIFA Club World Cup, but Players Face Limitations

The Seattle Sounders, Inter Miami, and potentially LAFC are poised for significant financial gains this summer as they participate in FIFA’s expanded Club World Cup. Each Concacaf team will receive a staggering $9.55 million just for competing. Earnings could rise further with performance bonuses: $2 million per win and $1 million per draw. Should an MLS team advance beyond the group stage, an additional $7.5 million awaits.

This inflow of cash is crucial for MLS teams that often struggle financially. However, players may not benefit substantially from this lucrative opportunity. Under the existing collective bargaining agreement, MLS players collectively can earn a maximum of $1 million in bonuses from the tournament—far less than what the clubs will see. This limit stems from a provision outlining payouts for specific tournaments, not accounting for the unprecedented prize pools associated with FIFA’s new competition.

Despite recent outreach by the MLS Players Association to discuss potential adjustments to these cap limits, no formal negotiations have taken place. With a roster of 30 players, the maximum bonus would equate to about $33,333 per player, which is not reflected in their salary cap charges. Sounders midfielder Cristian Roldan expressed mixed feelings, highlighting excitement about competing against top clubs while hoping for a resolution on compensation.

As the league considers a shift to a fall-spring calendar, which could benefit players, the relationship between the MLS and its players is more crucial than ever—especially as both sides navigate upcoming challenges.
