In response to worsening weather and aging power grids, homeowners are increasingly adopting backup batteries for reliable power. However, traditional battery solutions often have limitations in duration. A promising alternative is the concept of a virtual power plant, which is managed via cloud technology, and presents a lucrative opportunity for companies seeking to provide more reliable energy, particularly in regions facing extreme weather.
Base Power, an Austin-based startup, exemplifies this model by offering battery backup solutions to homeowners without selling the batteries outright. Instead, they rent the batteries, managing the installation, operations, and maintenance while also controlling energy usage to benefit both the grid and customers. CEO Zach Dell explains that when the power grid functions, the batteries support it, and in outages, they provide backup power for homes. This innovative approach allows homeowners to save 10 to 20% on monthly electricity bills.
To participate, homeowners pay a $595 upfront fee and roughly $19 monthly for the service, which includes energy sourced from wind, solar, natural gas, and coal. Many customers have solar panels, further reducing costs and enabling them to sell excess power back to Base, compensated at the real-time wholesale price plus an additional fee.
Base has partnered with prominent homebuilder Lennar, installing batteries in about 20 vulnerable Texas communities. Lennar’s leadership emphasizes the importance of improving the home-building sector’s resilience as it faces power-related challenges. Having raised $268 million from various investors, Base aims to expand beyond Texas, although potential tariffs on batteries from China may pose challenges to its growth.
