Segerstrom High Baseball Team Sanctioned by CIF for Eligibility Violations
Santa Ana, CA – April 18, 2025: The CIF Southern Section has imposed sanctions on the Segerstrom High School baseball team, barring them from competing in the upcoming 2025 playoffs. This decision follows multiple violations involving the use of an ineligible player.
In a swift response, the Santa Ana Unified School District took action the next day, removing Principal David Casper and Head Coach Erasmo Ramirez from their positions. According to a district press release, the decision was made as part of a commitment to upholding integrity and transparency in all school programs. "An internal investigation revealed that the Segerstrom High School varsity baseball team violated CIF bylaws," the statement noted.
As a consequence of these violations, Segerstrom will enter a probationary status effective immediately, which will last until February 16, 2026. This status means the baseball program is ineligible for the 2024-2025 CIF Southern Section Baseball Championships. Additionally, all wins from the current season have been forfeited. Initially boasting a record of 12-7 and a 5-2 league standing, the team now reflects a dismal 2-19 due to the forfeits.
The CIF’s announcement indicated that the ineligible athlete’s participation resulted in the necessary forfeitures, reinforcing that schools must ensure compliance with eligibility standards. The district’s investigation was proactive, as it self-reported findings to the CIF, confirming the rule violations.
Segerstrom may petition for reinstatement to CIF full status after February 1, 2026. The Jaguars are set to conclude their season against Katella High on May 6.
