Community Celebrates Rebuilding Milestone in Altadena
Altadena, CA – On April 28, 2025, Margot Stueber marked a significant milestone by breaking ground on her new home nearly four months after losing her residence in the devastating Eaton fire. Stueber, who had lived in her home for 18 years, cut a red ribbon amidst local officials and supporters, symbolizing hope and recovery in a community striving to rebuild.
The January 7 fire destroyed 9,414 structures and left many residents seeking ways to move forward. Stueber’s lot, near Altadena Drive and Fair Oaks Avenue, had been cleared of debris by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, paving the way for reconstruction. "This is the first day of my new life," Stueber shared, urging others affected by the fire to remain hopeful. Fellow resident Mark Jones, also displaced by the fire, echoed her sentiment, noting the encouraging shift towards rebuilding.
Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn Barger attended the ceremony and highlighted the county’s efforts to expedite the rebuilding process, including the creation of a one-stop office for residents and a forthcoming motion to allow self-certification for building permits. Currently, 322 zoning reviews have been initiated, with 164 cleared and the goal of having permits approved within 30 days. "The people here need hope," Barger emphasized.
As construction crews commenced work on Stueber’s home, the area buzzed with activity from the Army Corps and other construction vehicles. Col. Sonny Avichal mentioned that clearing debris has become more systematic, enhancing efficiency. Stueber’s journey serves as an emblem of resilience, inspiring the community that recovery is attainable. "There is a light at the end of the tunnel," Barger concluded, as residents look forward to rebuilding their lives.
