California School Board Approves New Policy for Trans Athletes

Redlands Unified School Board Votes to Exclude Transgender Athletes from Girls’ Sports

In a contentious meeting on Tuesday night, the Redlands Unified School Board in southern California voted 3-2 to adopt a policy barring transgender athletes from competing in girls’ sports. This decision aligns the district with nearby Chino Valley, which recently enacted a similar measure amid heated debates.

Board President Michelle Rendler, along with members Candy Olson and Jeanette Wilson, supported the policy. Olson expressed gratitude that “this insanity had not entered into society” during her upbringing, arguing that denying differences between men and women undermines scientific understanding. Critics, however, contend that the board is creating a problem that doesn’t exist; Trisha Keeling, executive director of Together for Redlands, pointed out during the meeting that there are currently no transgender athletes in the district.

Support for the policy reflects broader sentiments in California, where a bipartisan survey by the Public Policy Institute found that 65% of adults and 71% of public school parents believe transgender athletes should compete on teams corresponding to their sex assigned at birth. The Chino Valley school board president, Sonja Shaw, reinforced this perspective at the Redlands meeting, calling the decision "common sense."

The vote has stirred significant conversation around the rights of transgender athletes and the implications for women’s sports. As the debate continues, the Redlands policy serves as a representative case in ongoing discussions about gender, identity, and fairness in athletics across the state and beyond.
