One Fatality and Six Injuries in Shooting at Elizabeth City State University

A shooting at Elizabeth City State University in North Carolina left one person dead and six others injured, prompting a campus lockdown early Sunday. The incident occurred in the center of the campus after Yard Fest, a celebration marking the end of the weeklong Viking Fest events. A 24-year-old man, not affiliated with the university, was pronounced dead, with his identity withheld pending family notification.

Among the injured, four individuals sustained gunshot wounds, including three students, while two others were hurt during the chaos. Fortunately, none of the injuries are life-threatening, and all were transported to a hospital for care.

In a statement, the university expressed deep sadness over the “senseless act” of violence. Following the shooting, campus police referred inquiries to the university’s spokesperson, who did not immediately respond to requests for comments.

The lockdown was lifted later that day, and the university has since ramped up security patrols throughout the campus. However, access to certain areas remained restricted as investigations continued.

Elizabeth City State University, home to approximately 2,300 students, is located about 50 miles south of Norfolk, Virginia. The incident highlights the ongoing concerns regarding safety on college campuses, especially after large gatherings. The university community and local authorities are grappling with the aftermath, seeking to ensure safety and support for those affected.
