A suspect arrested for stealing Secretary Kristi Noem’s purse is illegally in the U.S., according to Ed Martin, the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia. A second suspect, also undocumented, is being sought by law enforcement. Martin emphasized that there is no evidence to suggest the theft was politically motivated, noting that it appeared to be a random act inspired by the purse’s appearance.
The investigation has involved Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), with Martin referencing President Trump’s directive to prosecute unauthorized individuals and ensure deportation when applicable. He described the thief as experienced, indicating he carefully scouted the area before executing the theft.
No further details about the suspect’s identity have been released, and a spokesperson for the D.C. Metropolitan Police declined to comment. As Secretary of Homeland Security, Noem is under Secret Service protection. When approached for comments, a spokesperson for the agency refrained from discussing the incident, indicating they would provide information in line with established procedures should criminal charges arise.
The theft occurred at Capital Burger in D.C. when a masked man approached Noem while she was dining with family. Surveillance footage captured him positioning his foot on her purse before swiftly taking it, containing $3,000 cash, a DHS access badge, passport, credit cards, blank checks, keys, and her driver’s license.
The investigation is being led by the Metropolitan Police alongside the U.S. Secret Service. When asked about the incident at the White House Easter Egg Roll, Noem stated she couldn’t comment further as the matter is still unresolved.
