Shedeur Sanders Drafted by Cleveland Browns in the Fifth Round of NFL Draft

The Cleveland Browns made a surprising choice in the NFL draft by selecting Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders with the 144th pick in the fifth round, a significant drop from predictions that positioned him as a potential first-round pick, possibly as high as No. 3 to the New York Giants or at No. 21 to the Pittsburgh Steelers. This decision followed a draft period where five other quarterbacks—Cam Ward, Jaxson Dart, Tyler Shough, Jalen Milroe, and Dillon Gabriel—were picked ahead of Sanders, who was regarded as one of the best prospects remaining.

Immediately after being drafted, Sanders expressed gratitude on social media, posting, “Thank you GOD.” The Browns then shared a highlight reel of his plays, labeling him as “Another playmaker in the mix.” Prior to the draft, Sanders was ranked 30th on NBC Sports’ draft board by Connor Rogers and was highlighted as the top prospect still available when the Browns selected him.

Shedeur, the son of NFL Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, began his college career at Jackson State in 2021, where his father was the head coach. After both moved to Colorado in 2022, Sanders excelled, especially in his senior season where he earned the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year title. He achieved significant stats, completing 74% of his passes, throwing for 4,134 yards, and recording 37 touchdowns against 10 interceptions.

His contributions were crucial to Colorado’s resurgence, leading the team to a nine-win season in 2024 after they had previously managed only one win. Despite his talent, there were concerns about his character off the field leading up to the draft.
