Los Angeles City Attorney Declines Charges in Campus Protests
The Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office announced on Friday that it will not pursue charges against hundreds arrested during pro-Palestinian and counter protests at UCLA and USC in 2024, citing insufficient evidence. After reviewing over 300 arrests made during mass protests in April and May, officials declined charges for most individuals primarily due to lack of evidentiary support and the universities’ inability to assist with identification.
Misdemeanor charges were filed against two individuals involved in separate incidents on the UCLA campus unrelated to the protests. These individuals face charges of simple battery, with one also charged for brandishing a weapon, false imprisonment, and resisting arrest. Additionally, three others were referred to a City Attorney Hearing, which serves as an alternative to prosecution.
City Attorney Hydee Feldstein Soto emphasized the office’s commitment to a fair legal process, thanking her team for their thorough evaluation of the evidence. Of the arrests made, the office declined to file charges related to 205 incidents occurring on May 1 and 5, 2024, and 93 arrests from an April 24 protest at USC.
