El Cajon Businesswoman Sentenced to Prison for Multi-Million-Dollar Fraud Scheme
A federal judge has sentenced El Cajon businesswoman Adriana Camberos to one year and one day in prison for orchestrating a complex fraud scheme shortly after receiving clemency from former President Donald Trump. U.S. District Court Judge Cynthia A. Bashant delivered the sentence on Friday, along with three years of supervised release and the forfeiture of millions in ill-gotten gains. Prosecutors revealed that Camberos had illegally redirected goods designated for sale in Mexico to the U.S. market, selling them at inflated prices and causing estimated losses exceeding $25 million to victims.
Andres Camberos, Adriana’s brother, received a separate sentence of year-long home detention, followed by three years of probation. Both siblings will also be required to pay restitution to the companies they defrauded.
This case gained additional attention due to Chula Vista Mayor John McCann’s involvement in Camberos’ earlier release from prison. McCann had written a letter to Trump advocating for clemency in 2020. Following her release, both Adriana and Andres Camberos contributed to McCann’s 2022 mayoral campaign, though McCann asserts he did not solicit these donations.
Adriana made headlines again when she purchased a $1.6 million luxury condominium in Coronado shortly after her release, a property previously managed by McCann’s real estate company, though he was not involved in the sale.
Despite her sentencing, Camberos’ lawyers indicated plans to appeal both the verdict and the sentence. In a statement made in court, Adriana expressed her remorse, saying, “I never thought I would be in a courtroom again. I’m mortified.”
As the case unfolds, the repercussions for the Camberos siblings may continue to ripple through the community.
