Retired federal judge Jay Gandhi, known for mediating wildfire settlements with utilities like PG&E and Southern California Edison, is now joining a lawsuit against the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP). Gandhi, who lost his home in the Palisades fire, is seeking accountability from the city for its role in the devastating blaze. The lawsuit, which now represents over 750 fire plaintiffs, alleges that the LADWP failed to maintain reservoirs and left power lines energized during a red flag warning, hindering firefighting efforts. The utility, represented by Munger, Tolles & Olson, argues that they are not liable for wildfire losses. Despite this, Gov. Gavin Newsom has ordered an independent investigation into the management of the LADWP’s water system. Gandhi believes the fire was preventable and hopes the lawsuit will lead to restitution for those affected. The legal team, which includes Robertson and Associates and Foley Bezek Behle & Curtis, is pushing for a jury trial and demanding changes to utility protocols to prevent future disasters.
