In a move to enhance child safety on its platform, Instagram is testing the use of artificial intelligence to detect if kids are lying about their ages. Parent company Meta Platforms announced the initiative on Monday, stating that AI will be used to proactively identify teen accounts suspected of belonging to underage users who provided inaccurate birthdates during sign-up.
If an account is found to misrepresent age, it will automatically be converted to a teen account with stricter restrictions, such as default privacy settings and limited access to sensitive content. The AI analyzes various signals to determine users’ ages, including content interactions, profile details, and account creation dates.
This development comes amid growing concerns about the impact of social media on younger users’ mental health and well-being. Additionally, states are considering age verification laws, prompting social media companies to take steps to ensure platform safety. Instagram plans to notify parents about the importance of accurate age information online and provide tools for discussing this with their teens.
