Student of Computer Engineering Utilizes Technology to Research Stress in Elderly Individuals

Kristine Vergara, a graduating computer engineering major, is conducting research to study how stress affects older adults when faced with mentally challenging tasks. She is analyzing stress wave patterns in aging seniors to understand how different factors impact their well-being, using machine learning algorithms and brain activity measurements for her study. The goal is to develop technology-driven solutions to improve stress management and mental health support for the aging population.

Vergara’s research is supported by the MSTEM Scholars Trained in Aging Research Program, preparing students for careers in aging science fields. She will be attending Columbia University in the fall to pursue a master’s degree in computer engineering to further her research in developing hardware for biomedical applications.

Her research advisor, Kiran George, highlights the importance of addressing the everyday stressors that aging adults face, as chronic stress can have negative impacts on physical and mental well-being. By understanding how the brain responds to stress, Vergara’s work could lead to the development of tools and programs to support healthy aging in the senior population.

Vergara credits George and the MSTEM STAR program for guiding her research interests and preparing her for graduate studies. She has received multiple scholarships and research opportunities to further her academic and career pursuits. Her ultimate goal is to design innovative hardware solutions that improve the well-being of older adults and contribute to healthier aging in the senior population.
