Palestinians facing water scarcity in Gaza as clean sources dwindle

Hundreds of thousands of residents in Gaza City have been left without clean water after Israel’s water supplies were cut due to the Israeli army’s offensive. The damage to a pipeline operated by the state-owned Mekorot has left many residents having to walk long distances to find water. The Israeli military has promised to coordinate repairs to the pipeline.

The situation has been worsened by the displacement of many Palestinians in Gaza, with most of the population now internally displaced due to the ongoing conflict. Access to water has become a luxury, with people queuing for hours to get a small fill, and many having to travel far to find clean water.

The coastal aquifer basin that runs through Gaza is severely depleted and polluted, with up to 97% of the water deemed unfit for human consumption. Desalination plants in Gaza have either been damaged or stopped operations due to power and fuel cuts by Israel. This has led to a decrease in water supply rates to an average of 3-5 litres per person per day, far below the minimum requirement for survival according to WHO indicators.

The lack of clean water in Gaza City has led to a real thirst crisis, with daily life becoming increasingly difficult for residents. The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas has exacerbated the situation, leaving many without access to clean water for drinking, cooking, and washing. Unless immediate action is taken to repair the damaged infrastructure and provide sufficient water supply, the situation is likely to worsen in the coming days.
