Update on MLS considering a switch to a European calendar

MLS owners met to discuss potential changes to the league’s calendar and competition format, including the regular season and playoffs. Commissioner Don Garber called these changes some of the biggest in the league’s history. While no decision was made during the meeting, the league is considering moving to the international calendar and exploring different competitive formats.

Owners expressed optimism about the potential changes and the need to continue working on them. The league indicated that any changes would not take effect until the 2027 season at the earliest. This means that moving to a fall-spring calendar after the 2026 World Cup is off the table.

While the World Cup could have been a platform to advertise the changes, executives stressed that it was not a hard deadline. The league will now engage with corporate partners, the MLS Players Association, and other stakeholders to discuss the proposed changes and their financial implications.

The MLS board of governors will meet again at the MLS All-Star Game in Austin, Texas, on July 23. The league will continue to evaluate the potential changes and work towards a decision in the future.
