Supreme Court permits Trump to end funding for teacher training grants

The Supreme Court has allowed the Trump administration to terminate Education Department grants for teacher training that officials deemed to violate their new policy opposing diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts. The decision, in a 5-4 ruling, blocks a judge’s ruling that said the administration had failed to follow the correct legal process. The grants totaling $65 million have been outstanding, with the majority conservative judges siding with the administration while Chief Justice John Roberts joined the liberals in dissent. The court stated that the district court judge did not have authority to order the funds to be paid under the Administrative Procedure Act. The grants in question were awarded under programs like the Teacher Quality Partnership and Supporting Effective Educator Development, found to promote DEI initiatives Trump sought to eliminate. A lawsuit filed by eight states on behalf of grant recipients argued the decision to rescind funding violated federal law. The case only affects grants in those states. This is the first Supreme Court win for Trump in his second term, as he continues to push for dismantling the Education Department. Previous emergency applications by the administration were not granted by the Supreme Court.
