Rep. Nanette Barragán, D-San Pedro, has announced that the Caucus on Homelessness will resume in the current session of Congress with the goal of addressing the nation’s homelessness crisis. The caucus will analyze the factors contributing to homelessness, educate Congress about federal programs, advocate for funding, and explore housing and services policies. The group was inactive for several years before Barragán and her colleagues reestablished it during the last congressional session.
Barragán will co-chair the caucus with Democratic Reps. Suzanne Bonamici, Sylvia Garcia, and Delia C. Ramirez. The caucus includes members from Southern California, like Ted Lieu, Lou Correa, Mark Takano, and Sara Jacobs. The group aims to address the root causes of homelessness, including lack of affordable housing, wages, mental health services, and support for veterans.
The current homeless population nationwide is at record levels, with California having over 187,000 homeless people. Los Angeles County, where Barragán is from, has over 75,000 homeless individuals. The caucus’s main goal is to defend critical programs from cuts, increase funding, and spotlight state and local initiatives that have made progress in addressing homelessness.
Barragán expressed confidence in the caucus’s ability to impact homelessness issues, despite a divided Congress. She emphasized the need for bipartisan support for solutions and highlighted the importance of preserving programs like Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. Overall, the caucus aims to make investments in areas lacking resources to address homelessness and advocate for equitable housing access for all Americans.
