Secretary Noem of Homeland Security visits El Salvador prison housing deported Venezuelans

South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem recently toured a detention facility in El Salvador where Venezuelans accused of being gang members are being held. The men, dressed in white T-shirts and shorts, stared silently from their cell and became agitated when she left. In a separate cell block holding Salvadoran prisoners, some of whom were members of the Mara Salvatrucha gang, guards instructed them to remove their T-shirts and face masks, revealing tattoos and gang affiliations.

Noem delivered a stern message to immigrants, warning them not to enter the country illegally and emphasizing the consequences they would face if they committed crimes against Americans. She also met with El Salvador President Nayib Bukele, who has gained admiration in the U.S. for his tough stance on gangs, despite concerns about due process.

Noem sees the relationship with El Salvador as a model for how other countries can work with the U.S. on immigration issues. Since taking office, she has been vocal about supporting immigration enforcement efforts, participating in operations with Border Patrol agents and appearing in television campaigns urging people in the country illegally to self-deport.

Noem’s visit to El Salvador is part of a larger three-day trip that will also take her to Colombia and Mexico. She continues to prioritize immigration issues and is actively engaging with other countries to find solutions to the complex challenges posed by illegal immigration.
