International Tufts graduate student detained by federal immigration authorities

Rumeysa Ozturk, a Tufts University graduate student from Turkey, was detained by DHS agents while on her way to break her Ramadan fast with friends. Her lawyer has filed a habeas petition in Massachusetts federal court to release her, as no charges have been filed against her to date. Authorities have listed Ozturk as being “in ICE Custody,” but have not provided further details. A judge has issued an order blocking the Trump administration from moving Ozturk outside of Massachusetts without notice. Tufts University president Sunil Kumar stated that the school was unaware of the incident and did not share information with federal authorities prior to her detention. The university is working to confirm if Ozturk’s visa status was terminated. Kumar expressed concern for the impact of Ozturk’s detention on the international community at the school. DHS and ICE have not responded to requests for comment on the situation. Ozturk’s location and status remain unclear as her lawyer continues to seek information on her behalf.
