California to monitor methane emissions using satellite technology

California Governor Gavin Newsom is leveraging technology to track methane emissions across the state, using satellites and sensors to detect this colorless, odorless gas that is a major contributor to pollution. This announcement comes amid the Trump administration’s efforts to roll back environmental protections.

As a co-chair of the “America is All In” coalition, Governor Newsom is collaborating with other state leaders, companies like Microsoft and Walmart, and representatives from all 50 states to combat climate change. The coalition aims to address greenhouse gases like methane and carbon dioxide that pose a threat to community health.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is reevaluating a 16-year-old finding that identified greenhouse gases as a threat under the Clean Air Act, including methane emissions. EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin stated that the Trump administration will not sacrifice national prosperity for environmental regulations.

Governor Newsom emphasized the importance of utilizing new data to cut harmful methane pollution in California and protect the state’s clean air. A $100 million investment will deploy eight satellites into space to track methane emissions, with one already in place. California officials will have access to the data to support mitigation efforts.

This initiative continues the efforts of former Governor Jerry Brown to track pollution both within California and beyond. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, Texas consumed the most natural gas in 2023, followed by California in second place.
