The tenants have formed the Tenants Committee 403 to demand the return of utilities, compliance with tenant protection ordinances, and cleaning of affected areas.
Some tenants have resorted to heating water on their stoves for showers, while others have left the complex due to safety concerns. Long-term health effects of the smoke and rubble from the fire remain a significant worry for those staying at the complex or involved in cleanup efforts. Community support has been crucial for the tenants, with volunteers from organizations like the Pasadena Community Job Center assisting with cleanup efforts.
Despite the challenges, tenants like Brenda Lopez and Maria Mares are determined to fight for their basic necessities and rights. The National Day Laborer Organizing Network (NDLON) has also joined in supporting the tenants’ committee in their efforts. With fears of health risks and ongoing struggles for basic utilities, the tenants continue to call for community solidarity and support in their fight for a safe and livable environment at 403 Figueroa Drive in Altadena.
