Trump readies multitude of executive orders on immigration, gender issues, and other topics

Donald Trump is set to sign at least a dozen executive orders after being sworn in as president, focusing on implementing his agenda quickly. Some of the orders include declaring a national emergency at the U.S.-Mexico border, resuming construction on the border wall, terminating diversity programs in federal agencies, and ending birthright citizenship. Democrats and legal groups are prepared to challenge any attempt to eliminate birthright citizenship in court, as it is mandated by the 14th Amendment. Additional executive orders on immigration seek to reinstate the “Remain in Mexico” policy for those entering the U.S. through Mexico and designate certain cartels and gangs as Foreign Terrorist Organizations.

Trump’s orders will allow the deployment of the U.S. military and National Guard to the border, with rules of engagement left to the Department of Defense. One order will mandate that government documents recognize only two sexes – male and female. Trump’s expected number of executive orders far exceeds what he did on his first day in office and surpasses the number signed by Joe Biden on his first day as well. Biden’s executive orders focused on ethics commitments, combating discrimination, reversing Trump’s immigration policies, and halting funding for the border wall and rejoining the Paris climate agreement.
