British indie band Sports Team faced a frightening ordeal at the beginning of their United States tour when they were robbed at gunpoint at a gas station in Vallejo, California. The group, consisting of six members, had their tour van broken into with cameras, laptops, and personal items stolen. Despite the shock, they managed to continue their tour and perform in Sacramento.
Lead guitarist Henry Young, a former CNN sports writer, explained that while some passports were stolen, the instruments remained untouched as they were safely stored in the fortified back of the van. The group called the police and were told to submit an online report, but they decided to push forward with their scheduled live gigs, refusing to let the incident derail their plans.
Young had previously shared about the unconventional journey of balancing day jobs with musical aspirations before Sports Team decided to pursue music full time. Their dedication paid off, leading to two top 10 UK albums and a Mercury Prize nomination for their debut album, “Deep Down Happy.”
Young reflected on the challenges of the music industry, including a past incident where their van was broken into and equipment stolen after a show. However, he emphasized that the experiences, while difficult, were ultimately worth it.
Sports Team’s resilience in the face of adversity has not gone unnoticed, with support pouring in from fans and fellow musicians alike. Despite the setback, the band remains determined to deliver their rock songs and entertain audiences on their US tour.
