Chiara Dailey, the defending state champion in Division 4 and a two-time Mt. SAC winner, was upstaged at the Mt. SAC Invitational by Abigail Errington of South Pasadena. Errington clocked a time of 16 minutes, 57 seconds, beating Dailey who finished second in 17:06. Ayanna Hickey of The Bishop’s School won the Division 3-5 Individual Sweepstakes in a photo finish against Sage Creek’s Gabriella Peters.
Dailey led the race until Errington surged past her on a steep uphill portion called “The Gauntlet.” Hickey, who collapsed at the finish line last year due to kidney failure, won the race in a lean against Peters with a time of 17:56.
In the team races, the Bobcats of Sage Creek captured the team victory with 78 points, while Cathedral Catholic’s girls finished second to South Pasadena in the Team Sweepstakes. Jocelyn Gibson led Cathedral Catholic with a fourth-place finish overall at 18:18.
On the boys’ side, Josiah Bowman of Sage Creek finished fourth in the Division 3-5 Individual Sweepstakes with a time of 15:18. The Bobcats placed second in the team race, just behind Burrough’s of Ridgecrest.
Despite the setbacks, both Cathedral Catholic and Chiara Dailey remain positive and focused on rebounding for the upcoming Division 3 section and state championships. The competition at Mt. SAC Invitational has motivated the athletes to work harder for future races.
