Truck driver fatally strikes 20-year-old Queens man riding moped in Greenpoint

A 20-year-old moped driver was tragically killed in a collision with a truck in Greenpoint on Thursday. The incident occurred at around 7am at the intersection of Greenpoint and Kingsland avenues. The preliminary investigation found that the truck driver, a 58-year-old, was making a right turn from Greenpoint Avenue onto Kingsland Avenue when the collision occurred, throwing the moped driver onto the road. The moped driver, identified as Oscar Delarosa from Queens, was taken to Bellevue Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The truck driver remained at the scene and an investigation by the NYPD’s Highway Collision Investigation Squad is ongoing. No arrests have been made at this time. City Councilmember Lincoln Restler of Brooklyn and New York state Sen. Kristin Gonzalez, who represent parts of Brooklyn, both expressed their condolences and called for the area to be made safer to prevent future tragedies.

According to official data, more than 230 people have died in traffic crashes across the city this year, compared to more than 260 total last year. As the investigation into Thursday’s collision continues, concerns over road safety and the need for improvements to prevent further accidents in Greenpoint have been raised.

The tragic death of Delarosa has brought attention to the issue of traffic safety in the area. As the investigation continues, it is hoped that measures will be taken to improve road safety and prevent further tragedies.
